The past 10 years will always be remembered as the decade that the internet took over music. I won’t rehash all the controversial details as they have been well exhausted elsewhere. As a fan of music, I want to focus on the postive results! iPods, filesharing, and affordable download sites have swelled personal music collections. Music blogs and social networking sites have effectively brought the underground to the surface. Protools and other affordable home recording equipment have easily allowed artists to self produce and release their music online at an unprecedented rate. All of which promote a self sustaining ecosysytem of music consumption. In the process, genres have been bent and tastes have been blurred. Indie? Mainstream? What should a listener care these days? The average music fan of today is a hungry beast. This sprawling rush of food has brandished it with an expansive taste pallate and a growing hunger for more. And while the music industry is still struggling to find a way to make money, there is a whole new breed of independent artists out there right now feeding it. As a musician, I do my best to satisfy. As a fan, I am enjoying the meal.
To commemorate this great decade, I will be posting reviews for my favorite albums of the 00s. I wanted to do a top 10, or a countdown type thing, but i guess i just don’t work that way. So enjoy the reviews for what they are - personal insights into some of my favorite albums that came out in the last ten years.
